Here is an excerpt of my IT 104 paper from class: "Imagine a connected world where physical, inanimate objects in a house, in a street, in a city, in a medical facility communicate with one another. Imagine a life saved because the connected objects identified a medical threat or simply conserved energy by predictive analytics of data gathered from predictive behavior of the patient (think Alzheimer's, Diabetes) and able to preempt a diabetic coma by supplying the right amount of insulin; or prevent a forgetful episode for a patient losing connection with the real world.
I do not have to imagine at all, as I was born 21 years ago with the predecessor of the Internet of Things that helped my mom protect me in the womb from a premature delivery using telemedicine communications with a 24/7 monitoring center and a simple contraption that monitored contractions and communicated real time to nurses that remotely monitored and advised her on an hour by hour basis. At that time, my mom had to activate the process by wearing the device and let the contraption telecommunicate to the monitoring device of significant variations in contractions.
In the new world, the objects embedded in a sensor on my mom’s arm (wearable) would have told the medicine pump to pump an exact dose to prevent contractions and would have communicated to the nurses station real-time. Think of dollars saved and homely comfort in a dire situation like that where hospital bills would have rendered my family bankrupt. A connected devices system today can give peace of mind to parents wanting to watch baby monitors while away at work or for a pre-set slow cooker to start warming food even as the mother’s car leaves the office. This is the new revolution in IT Industry called “Internet of Things”.
“The Internet of Things is one of the biggest of all innovations occurring in the recent IT revolution that revolves around increased machine-to-machine communication; it’s built on cloud computing and networks of data-gathering sensors; it’s mobile, virtual, and instantaneous connection; and is expected to make everything in our lives from streetlights to seaports ‘smart.’” [1] "I really do love how far and ever changing technology is. Its hard to think that the technology that helps saved me years ago is what is allowing premature children survive everyday. Thanks for reading!
